More notes from the trail

On Tuesday, March 15, the community councils of Fairview, Government Hill and Mountain View hosted a candidate forum for the downtown Assembly seat.  It was one of the few forums focused on that single seat, and it lasted about two hours, easily the longest of any this season.

What was apparent from both the prepared questions and the subsequent queries from the audience was a deep level of concern about the amount of money being proposed and, to some, wasted for both the Knik Arm Crossing and Port of Anchorage projects.  So it wasn’t too surprising when I received the following e-mail from one of the audience members a few days later:

What would happen if the folks pushing Alaska’s Bridge to Nowhere, the proposed Knik Arm Bridge, had to go to the bank to ask for a loan?

Two of Alaska’s best actors, Alice Welling and Mark Muro, answer that question for you as things go from bad to worse in this sharp, funny analogy to the recent housing crash.  Remember, the real numbers in the Knik Arm Bridge and Toll Authority’s financial plan are  exactly 1000 times worse than the ones Nick Bridge uses to try to get a mortgage from the smart loan officer who becomes first incredulous, and then befuddled, as she is drawn into considering the classic nightmare deal.  Here’s the link to this Must-See video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEjnQDwHSvo

For annotations explaining KABATA’s Pro-Forma Financial numbers, and a background sheet with all of the nitty gritty, go to: http://knikbridgefacts.org

Please forward this to your friends and contacts.  It really helps explain what is at stake if the 2 KABATA bills are passed in this year’s legislature.  Also, please sign in to YouTube and give it a big “Thumbs Up”.

www.knikbridgefacts.org also has information on how to contact your legislators.

I’ll leave it to readers to see if they want to follow through on the recommendations, but watching the video is pretty entertaining…

Regards,

Patrick

  1. Pat,

In today’s paper Chris Birch is quoted as saying there is currently a “forensic audit of the cost overruns” down at the port. That sounds ominous! Is your port committee group doing this? Is someone going to jail? When will you publish the results of the forensic audit?
